At the National Workshop Organized by the National Assembly
Makhzoumi Foundation, represented by the Deputy General Manager, Mr. Samer Safah, took part at the national workshop organized by the National Assembly in collaboration with the Italian Centre for Cooperation, under the title "The Social Impact of Economic Reforms in Lebanon: the Parliamentary and Civil Society Perspective", under the auspices of the House Speaker Mr. Nabih Berri, represented by the MP Nmr. Abdel-Latif Zein. This workshop was held at the National Assembly Library Auditorium, on July 7, 2010.
MP Mr. Zein launched the workshop pointing out that National Assembly's role lies in reviewing and correcting the policies set by the Executive Authority, and as well in calling for account those responsible for any failure, away from and political considerations. Then the Italian Ambassador in Lebanon, Gabriel KiKia gave a speech talking about the vivid democracy in Lebanon and its attributes, stressing the exchange of experiences in Lebanon being a privileged country.
The Chamber of Commerce President, Mr. Mohammad Choucair, talked about the economic impact and the economic reform initiatives that should be in accordance with the priorities and needs of the country. The Head of the General Labor Union, Mr. Ghassan Ghosn, presented a comprehensive study on the project related to the "law of amending some provisions of the Social Security Act and establishing the pension and social protection schemes", indicating the difficulties that lie in the implementation of this study.
The head of the Lebanese Business Assembly Mr. Camille Manasseh saw that the social problem in Lebanon is not the decrease in the income purchasing power as much as it is the slow development of the national economy, as a result of the political crisis. The Head of the Sociology and Anthropology Department at the University of Saint Joseph – Beirut, Rula Abi Habib Khoury, presented a detailed paper on "The Role of the National Assembly in the Public Policies: towards authority for change."
At the end, a general discussion took place on the tackled issues.
