An Environmental Symposium on “Environmental Problems and Possible Solutions”
In the framework of its activities on environment and the ways of protecting it, Makhzoumi Foundation took part at the symposium organized by the “Friends of Kamal Jumblatt Association”, under the title of "current environmental challenges in Lebanon", at the Public Hall in Einab – Aley, on July 14, 2010. The Participants of the seminar were the Minister of Immigrant Affairs, Mr. Akram Chehayeb, the "Environment and Development" Magazine Editor Mr. Najib Saab, and the journalist Habib Maalouf.
Minister Chehayeb opened the Symposium pointing out that the attention given to environmental issues has not yet been interpreted into environmental policies aiming at sustainable development. He also presented the major environmental problems in Lebanon. Engineer Najib Saab then explained the reasons that hinder resolving the environmental problems we are suffering from. He saw that the solution to these problems lies by 90% in applying deterrent laws away from the interference of Ministers and MPs, and as well in cooperating with the universities to identify environmental problems and establishing a national institution for the environment to tackle environmental issues.
The Journalist and Environmental Philosophy Professor, Mr. Habib Maalouf, saw that the experienced environmental problems are due to cultural, intellectual, ethical, political and assessing options, pointing out that the solution to these problems lies in making life and intellectual choices based on environmental philosophy rather than expediency and consumables and in starting from a clear strategic background that is more independent and cost less.
